Failure is gradual, until it isn't
Seawalls usually give plenty of warning. The problem is that the early signs are easy to write off as cosmetic.
What to look for
Walk your wall at low tide and after a king tide and check for:
- Sinkholes or soft spots behind the wall
- Cracks in the cap or panels
- Wall leaning toward the water
- Rust staining from corroding rebar or tiebacks
- Gaps between panels
- Muddy water along the wall after tides
- Blocked or missing weep holes
- Water overtopping the cap during king tides
Why Fort Lauderdale walls are vulnerable
Porous limestone, heavy boat traffic, saltwater and seasonal king tides all accelerate wear. Many walls in the isles were built decades ago.
